Suicide Rates in HIV Patients After the 1996 introduction of antiretroviral therapy, the suicide rate of HIV-positive men and women in Switzerland decreased but not for everyone. It was found that most HIV patients who died by suicide had mental disorders, and 30% of those affected had received no psychiatric care. READ MORE
ECT Treatment of Catatonia in Young Persons This month’s Clinical Case Conference describes the ECT treatment of a 19-year-old woman presenting initially with manic excitement followed by a lengthy period of mutism, immobility, food and fluid refusal, and a rising temperature and CPK that led to a diagnosis of malignant catatonia. A 32-year study tracking 1,037 children adds to what is known about the neurodevelopmental model by demonstrating that in those who later developed schizophrenia, some cognitive impairments were apparent at age 7 and remained stable, whereas other cognitive problems emerged between childhood and adolescence.
