Separate electrodes, firm pressure by steadying the patient's head, and adequate washing with a conducting solution of the parietal area are the 3 vital factors in achieving adequate unilateral electroconvulsive therapy. By attending to these points it has been found that in every case a convulsion could be produced with the same voltages and timing that were used with bilateral treatments.
