A note on some recent studies of released mental hospital patients in the community

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1176/ajp.133.1.73

The author conducted a literature search for follow-up studies of patients released from state mental hospitals to the community to assess the impact of released patients and the community on one another. She found that the follow-up studies lacked comparability in several ways and concludes that there is a need for greater comparability in future studies so that their validity as indicators of patients' postrelease functioning may be increased.
