The Effect of Financing on Psychiatric Care

There will probably not be a single system of payment to physicians under national health insurance, but it seems likely that the option of obtaining care through an organized system such as a health maintenance organization will be mandated. The author discusses the pros and cons of such organizations and how mental health services might operate within them. He urges psychiatrists to assume an active role in determining what psychiatric services are needed in this country and how they can best be delivered.
