Gross Hematuria as a Complication in the Combination Use of Psychotrophic Drugs
Abstract
A case of gross hematuria complicating the combined use of chlorpromazine, trifluoperazine, amitriptyline, and benztropine mesylate is reported. The mechanism involved is felt to be secondary to mechanical stresses on bladder vasculature following bladder atony produced by the anticholinergic side effects of the drugs. Advantages of the combination use of psychoactive drugs are cited; however, an increased awareness of the side effects and complications attendant to such use is to be encouraged.
