Alterations in Cell Membrane Activity in Depression
Abstract
Findings from a series of related experiments led to a working hypothesis suggesting that there may be an abnormality in aspects of cell membrane properties that normally regulate the movement of electrolytes across the plasma membrane in a subgroup of depressed patients. These patients appear to be responsive to lithium, and there is evidence that the postulated abnormality may be genetically determined. The authors outline the potential usefulness of the erythrocyte as a model for studying electrolyte transport in neurons.
