The Attitudes of Patients and Aides Toward the Role of the Psychiatric Aide

It has been difficult to evolve a system whereby psychiatric aides can be effectively selected and oriented to their roles. In an attempt to involve the patient in an evaluation of the aide's role, the authors interviewed 80 patients as well as 40 aides. Regarding the aide's function, patients were significantly more concerned than aides with humanistic, as opposed to custodial, values. "Humanistic" aides were evaluated significantly more favorably by patients than were "custodial" aides.
