Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1176/ajp.130.3.317

Of 967 patients transferred from hospitals for the criminally insane to civil mental hospitals as a result of the Supreme Court decision in the Baxstrom case, 26 were returned to hospitals for the criminally insane between 1966 and 1970. Some differences were also found between patients returned via civil proceedings and those returned via criminal proceedings.
