Cognitive, behavioral, and motivational treatments are among the most well-defined and rigorously studied psychotherapeutic interventions for substance use disorders. It is notable that these three general approaches encompass, almost entirely, the universe of scientifically validated therapies for a range of alcohol and drug use disorders and hence should be a component of any substance abuse clinician's repertoire. In this chapter we provide a brief overview of their major defining techniques and strategies for implementation.
