Letter to the Editor

Dr. Gabbard Replies

GLEN O. GABBARD, M.D.
Houston, Tex.

To the Editor: I appreciate the clarification from my friends Anthony Bateman and Peter Fonagy. Since they are the architects of Mentalization-Based Therapy, I would certainly not dispute their description of how transference is used in their approach. I should have been more specific and used "transference interpretation" rather than "transference work." However, the point of my editorial remains the same: therapeutic strategies that have different approaches to the transference have been shown to be efficacious in the treatment of patients who have serious personality disturbances, and we cannot assume that one size fits all.
