J. M. Looney 1, and R. G. Hoskins 1

1 Memorial Foundation for Neuro-Endocrine Research, Boston, Research Service of the Worcester (Mass.) State Hospital.

A preliminary report is made of the metabolic and therapeutic effects of 2:4 dinitrophenol and 3:5 dinitro-ortho-cresol administered consecutively to 10 schizophrenic patients. Both drugs caused increase in the rate of oxygen consumption with various other metabolic effects indicative of increased oxidative efficiency.

The ortho-cresol proved to be the more potent but showed the property of causing discoloration of the skin and scleraæ.

The therapeutic results were indeterminate.

Aside from discoloration of the integument by the ortho-cresol neither drug, within the limits of dosage used, caused any perceptible harmful effects.
