Subcortical hyperintensity on magnetic resonance imaging: a comparison of normal and depressed elderly subjects

Subcortical hyperintensity on T2-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging
was significantly more common and more severe in elderly depressed patients
referred for ECT than in a matched control group of normal elderly
subjects. The potential clinical and research implications of these
findings are discussed.
