NIMH/NIH Consensus Development Conference statement. Mood disorders: pharmacologic prevention of recurrences. Consensus Development Panel
This report represents the consensus of a panel of representatives from
psychiatry, psychology, pharmacology, epidemiology, internal medicine, and
the general public regarding the use of pharmacologic agents to prevent
recurrences of mood disorders. The panel concluded that recurrent mood
disorders, which have a high prevalence and serious consequences, are
underdiagnosed and undertreated. Applying appropriate strategies to the
management and use of pharmacologic agents will enhance the likelihood of
compliance and the prevention of recurrence with a minimum of bothersome
side effects. Such strategies should be used within the context of a
supportive relationship among doctor, patient, and family.
