Conflict among psychiatric residents in response to pregnancy

EL Auchincloss

An angry conflict erupted between male and female psychiatric residents when 3 of 12 residents at a major training center become pregnant in the second year of training. The author explores the fantasies and feelings that fueled this conflict from the points of view of intrapsychic and group dynamics. Problems within the institution are seen as providing the context for the residents' conflicts aroused by the event of pregnancy.
