Does Lithium Block the Effects of Amphetamine? A Report of Three Cases

ABRAHAM FLEMENBAUM M.D., M.S.1

1 Research Psychiatrist and Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Texas Tech University School of Medicine, Lubbock, Tex. 79409

The author presents three case reports supporting the hypothesis that lithium therapy inhibits the effect of amphetamine. He suggests that the pharmacologic mechanisms of action of lithium and amphetamine are directly opposite and that lithium could be prophylactic for cases of amphetamine abuse; he suggests further research to evaluate this hypothesis.
