An Overview of a Psychiatric Clinic Population

PETER E. SIFNEOS M.D.1

1 Associate Director, Department of Psychiatry, Beth Israel Hospital, 330 Brookline Ave., Boston, Mass. 02215, and Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, Boston

The author describes a set of criteria designed as guidelines in the evaluation of persons who apply for treatment at a psychiatric clinic. The main focus in this paper is on determining which patients are good candidates for short-term anxiety-provoking psychotherapy, but it is hoped that this will lead to the establishment of selection criteria for a variety of therapeutic techniques.
