Collaborative Provision of Aftercare Services

ROBERT M. PRINCE JR. M.D.1, RAYMOND E. ACKERMAN M.D.2, , and BARBARA S. BARKSDALE 3

1 Psychiatric Service Chief, Aftercare Project, Division of Community Mental Health Services, P.O. Box 485, Columbia, S.C. 29202, South Carolina Department of Mental Health
2 Deputy Commissioner, Division of Community Mental Health Services, South Carolina Department of Mental Health
3 Acting Chief, Research and Evaluation Section, Division of Alcohol and Drug Addiction, South Carolina Department of Mental Health

Data obtained from mental health clinics and private physicians serving 1,182 chronic psychotic patients demonstrated that group methods not only make more efficient use of manpower but are also significantly more effective than traditional individual methods in the aftercare of these patients. State-level assistance was shown to be quite helpful in improving community-level aftercare programs.
