Continuing Education for Community Psychiatry

LOUIS F. RITTELMEYER JR. M.D.1, ROBERT G. KVARNES M.D.2, , and IRVING SCHNEIDER M.D.3

1 Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Psychiatric Outpatient Services, Georgetown University School of Medicine, 3800 Reservoir Rd., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20007 and Director of field Studies, Associated Faculties Program in Community Psychiatry
2 Director of the Washington School of Psychiatry, Washington, D.C. and Chairman, Associated Faculties Program in Community Psychiatry
3 Director of the Arlington Mental Health Center, Arlington, Va. and Director of Curriculum, Associated Faculties Program in Community Psychiatry

The authors describe what is probably the first example of the joining together of all the psychiatric teaching institutions in a metropolitan area to sponsor a teaching program in psychiatry. Involving more than 400 mental health professionals in its seven years of existence, this program includes seminars and a practicum, leading to a certificate; a Community Psychiatry Forum; all-day workshops; and consultations. In addition to fulfilling specific needs, the program has created a professional "community" of the many groups involved in psychiatric teaching, practice, and research.
