The author reviews the content of two booksthe Levines' A Social History of Helping Services and the report of the Joint Commission on Mental Health of Childrenand points out that many elements of today's community mental health movement were in use in the past, a fact that is ignored in the Commission's report. He stresses the need for American psychiatry to examine and use its history.
