Psychiatric Liaison with Neurology and Neurosurgery

Z. J. LIPOWSKI M.D.1

1 Director, Psychiatric Consultation Service, Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, and Professor of Psychiatry, Dartmouth Medical School, Hanover, N.H. 03755

A joint teaching conference organized by the psychiatric liaison service at the Montreal Neurological Institute is described as a model for imparting knowledge about psychosocial aspects of illness and disability. Examples are given to illustrate the teaching techniques and the wide variety of psychosocial problems encountered; the latter reflect the important but neglected interface between neurology and psychiatry. The author believes that psychiatry and neurology can only gain from their rapprochement as it leads to improved patient care and better understanding of psychosomatic relationships.
