The author reviews some approaches to training psychiatrists in mental retardation. He describes a program begun in the District of Columbia to provide consultation for mental retardation. In addition to teaching the physical aspects of retardation, this program attempts to incorporate training in family interaction and its relationship to the social environment. The resident sees the retarded child not only as a genetic product, but also as he affects and is affected by his interpersonal environment.
