VAN BUREN O. HAMMETT M.D.1, CLIFFORD J. BODARKY ED.D.2, , and PAUL J. FINK M.D.3

1 Chairman of the department and Director of the Hahnemann Community Mental Health Center, Department of Mental Health Sciences, Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, 249 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, Pa. 19107
2 Executive Director, Department of Mental Health Sciences, Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, 249 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, Pa. 19107
3 Director of the Division of Education and Training, Department of Mental Health Sciences, Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, 249 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, Pa. 19107

The authors describe one model for setting up a good relationship between an academic department of psychiatry and a community mental health program. The "marriage model" emphasizes total integration. It has proved to be effective in providing a large volume of clinical service, a fruitful context for numerous education and training programs, and many opportunities for research.
