EMILY MUMFORD PH.D.1, FRED BROWN PH.D.2, , and M. RALPH KAUFMAN M.D.3

1 Associate Professor of Psychiatry in Sociology, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, New York, N.Y. 10029
2 Professor of Psychiatry in Psychology, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, New York, N.Y. 10029
3 Esther and Joseph Klingenstein Professor of Psychiatry and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, New York, N.Y. 10029

The authors describe a pilot project designed to provide the wide range of services of a hospital-based team to a group of elementary school children and their families. The team found numerous physical and mental problems as well as serious social problems that had interfered with the ability of the target families to avail themselves of health services. The authors conclude that the use of hospital-based teams working in the schools may offer the best approach to providing truly comprehensive, coordinated, and continuous help.
