The author evaluates the significance of van Gieson`s pioneering work and original concepts in relation to the historical development of research in psychiatry and the foundation of the Pathological Institute of the New York State Hospitals for the Insane, the first multidisciplinary research institute in the Western hemisphere for the investigation and treatment of diseases of the nervous system.
