The authors present the rationale and description of a promising development in psychotherapyWATS telephone therapy. In certain selected cases the formal regular use of the telephone to conduct routine psychotherapy has many advantages over traditional therapy. They describe the use of this method in following up alcoholics and express the belief that a similar plan might be helpful with other diagnostic groups such as opiate addicts, depressives, and schizophrenics.
