Toxic Amblyopia and Peripheral Neuropathy with Ethchlorvynol Abuse

EDWARD BROWN M.D., and GEORGE G. MEYER M.D.1

1 Department of psychiatry, University of Texas Medical School, San Antonio, Tex.

The widespread use of ethchlorvynol as a hypnotic has led to observations that should make its users and prescribers aware of potentially serious side effects. The authors present a case involving toxic amblyopia and peripheral neuropathy, which were reversed upon cessation of the drug. The abuse of relatively safe medications through chronic use and self-prescribed increased dosages necessitates vigilance by physicians, pharmacists, and patients.
