The American Expatriate in South Viet Nam

JOHN A. TALBOTT M.D.1

1 Director of community psychiatry, St. Luke's Hospital Center, Amsterdam Ave. at 114th St., New York, N. Y. 10025

The author presents case histories of American civilians in South Viet Nam who came to psychiatric attention. Of interest were the patients' frequent past histories of psychiatric illness and their sense of failure elsewhere. The author discusses the high incidence of psychosis, alcoholism, and psychopathic behavior in this population and elucidates some of the motivations of civilians who go to Viet Nam.
