Suicide Among College Students

MATHEW ROSS M.D.1

1 Private practice at 333 Commonwealth Ave., Chestnut Hill, Mass. 02167

This survey of British and U. S. studies of college student suicide indicates that there is an unusually high rate of suicide among college students; it is a significant cause of student death. The author believes that college student suicide is predictable and preventable and that early recognition (especially of depression, the most frequent forerunner of suicidal attempts) and prompt, appropriate treatment are still the mainstay of preventive efforts.
