A Cross-Cultural Survey of Symptoms in Depression

WILLIAM W. K. ZUNG M.D.1

1 Assistant professor of psychiatry, Duke University Medical Center and Veterans Administration Hospital, Fulton St. and Erwin Rd., Durham, N. C. 27705

Using his Self-Rating Depression Scale in six foreign countries, the author found that self-ratings of depressed patients were comparable between countries and differed significantly from scores of normal subjects and nondepressed patients. There was high correlation between the self-ratings and physicians' global ratings of depressed patients, and between scores on this test and other specific depression rating scales.
