Because of the power orientation in the mental health education system, student compassion or emotional involvement with the patient, the student's most valuable asset, is often neglected in the struggle for grades. To help develop compassion in the student or professional, the author proposes formation of "powerless groups"groups with common interests but no institutional responsibilities. Three such groups are examined.
