After reviewing the current laws and practices governing abortion in other parts of the world, the author concludes that public pressure in the United States will probably be directed increasingly toward social rather than medical indications for abortion. This trend, which culminates in abortion upon request, may create serious personal conflicts among physicians confronted with such requests, however, since their medical training has fostered attitudes not conducive to this view.
