Collaborative Training Programs in Alcoholism: Psychiatrists and General Practitioners

PHILIP SOLOMON M.D.1

1 Clinical professor of psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Mass. His address is 104 Lake Avenue, Newton Center, Mass. 02159

The author believes that the general practitioner, as well as the psychiatrist, should treat the alcoholic patient. The general practitioner's reluctance can be overcome with proper educational training in alcohol problems presented in lecture courses, seminar courses, or supervised psychotherapy. The seminar, limited to eight to ten physician-students, is becoming increasingly popular. Additional training in supervised psychotherapy enables the physician-student to use this technique in his own practice.
