Some Aspects of the Relationship of the Urban Pediatric Hospital to Community Mental Health Programs

The expanded role of the urban pediatric hospital in the delivery of comprehensive medical care has been accompanied by increasing referrals of patients with social and emotional problems. In the treatment of these patients the "mecca" philosophy of the hospital must be weighed against the realistic appraisal of the most appropriate community resource. Clinical and geographical responsibilities must be delineated to make effective use of the urban pediatric hospital and reduce duplication of mental health services.
