The fascinating symbolism seen in the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch has long been the object of speculation by scholars and critics. This author has attempted to elucidate the meaning of the artist's imagery by applying modern concepts of mental mechanisms to the paintings; he concludes that much of Bosch's work can be understood as the imgery of one troubled by the frightening chimeras and demons of his inner mind.
