A review of current research clearly indicates that variables, other than technical skills, within the therapist, clinical judge and experimenter contribute to the outcome of their professional work. Many of the effects of these variables are unintended and operation of the factors, which lead to such effects, unrecognized. The task confronting responsible professionals is clear. We must become increasingly aware of these variables and the specific manner in which they affect our outcomes.
