SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE ROLE OF AN ARMY PSYCHIATRIST
SAUL L. BROWN M. D.
The writer has attempted to spotlight some of the problems facing the recently trained psychiatrist who may be serving a period of active duty in the military forces. He has noted such problems as the authoritarian structure of the military service, the ambivalence that may arise within the psychiatrist in having to fulfill a significant role in such an environment, the need for the psychiatrist to comprehend the cultural framework in which he is operating, and the problem of limited communication in the authoritarian culture. He has also taken note of certain of the sources of frustration presenting themselves to the psychiatrist in the Army, as well as some of the areas for personal growth and further study.
