SPECIAL PSYCHIATRIC PROBLEMS OF THE PARAPLEGIC

Report of a Case of Attempted Suicide by a Paraplegic

J. PETRUS M. D.1, and A. B. BALABAN M. D.1

1 The Neuropsychiatric Division of Veterans Administration Hospital, Bronx, N. Y.

1. A case of attempted suicide by a paraplegic is presented as a case of special interest because of the extreme rarity of such reports.

2. A discussion of psychiatric problems of the paraplegic is presented with emphasis on his reactions to his disability and to his environmental handicaps, and including some of the approaches that have been made to cope with these problems. Factors important in determining the prognosis are presented.
