PAUL H. HOCH M. D.1, JAMES P. CATTELL M. D.1, , and HARRY H. PENNES M. D.1

1 The Department of Research Psychiatry, N. Y. State Psychiatric Institute, New York City; Department of Psychiatry, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York City.

This paper discusses theoretical points of drug-induced abnormal mental states. The reaction of 3 different drugs, sodium amytal, pervitin, and mescaline, on the same individual is described and the differences noted. The relationship of personality type to drug reaction is evaluated and the normalizing and disorganizing effect of certain drugs on mental patients discussed.
