Prefrontal lobotomy is a valuable method in the treatment of certain abnormal mental states when other more conservative modes of treatment have failed to give permanent relief. It holds out hope for many patients who, without the operation, would be hospitalized permanently.
Prefrontal lobotomy is indicated for certain carefully selected patients who are suffering from intractable pain whether of organic or functional type when less radical measures fail to give relief.
The clinical results were better and the unpleasant sequelae were fewer after the grade 3 than after the grade 4 operation.
