CEREBROSPINAL FLUID CHANGES IN ELECTROSHOCK TREATMENT OF PSYCHOSES

(Spectrophotometric and Enzyme Studies)

M. SPIEGEL-ADOLF M. D.1, P. H. WILCOX M. D.2, , and E. A. SPIEGEL M. D.3

1 The Traverse City State Hospital, Traverse City, Michigan.
2 The Department of Colloid Chemistry, Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pa.
3 The Department of Experimental Neurology, Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pa.

1. The cerebrospinal fluid of untreated schizophrenics shows a pronounced selective absorption in ultraviolet at lgr= 2650 A.

2. Electroshock treatment influences the ultraviolet absorption of the cerebrospinal fluid (initial decrease, followed by increase on repeated application of high A. C.).

3. Enzymatic substances apparently belonging to the groups of nucleases and desaminases increase in the CSF following electroshock convulsions.

4. Lipases are much less affected by electroshock convulsions than are the nucleases.
