The Boston State Hospital case: "involuntary mind control," the constitution, and the "right to rot"

Abstract

The recent Boston State Hospital case represents a problematic decision on the right of inpatients to refuse treatment. The authors describe how basic misconceptions of psychopharmacology led to questionable analysis of the constitutional issues at stake. The effects of the decision may seriously impair proper care for the hospitalized mentally ill.
