Many patients possess such exemplary traits and virtues that their
psychotherapists are inspired to emulate them. This process can benefit the
clinician and reinforce the therapeutic alliance, rapport, and the spirit
of reciprocity; however, it can also arouse responses by the clinician that
are therapeutically detrimental. Awareness of this hazard can enable the
clinican to avert it and enhance the benefits provided by the patient's
outstanding strengths.
