Abstract

The author summarizes the English language literature on ancient, modern, and recent Chinese psychiatry for psychiatrists traveling to mainland China and others interested in cross-cultural psychiatry. Practices and beliefs regarding the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness are described, together with manpower and facilities, professional publications, and research directions. The article concludes with a suggested outline for data gathering by psychiatric travelers to mainland China.
