The author presents a conceptual framework for two different kinds of psychotherapy of short duration, which he calls the anxiety-provoking and the anxiety-suppressive types. Criteria for the selection of patients and the techniques used in each type are described, and follow-up findings from the Massachusetts General Hospital are summarized.
