Abstract

Provisions for the treatment of mental illness under various kinds of insurance coverage have undergone dramatic change, which the author outlines. He also describes the expectations, patient and contract characteristics, and results of establishing psychiatric services in the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, a large group health plan. Utilization rates (which are much higher than in the UAW program) and the problems encountered over an eight-year period are included.
