Abstract

The American Psychiatric Association encourages psychiatrists to 1) diagnose and treat nicotine dependence, 2) recognize the possible role of nicotine and underlying neurochemical mechanisms in the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric disorders, and 3) participate in advocacy, prevention, and research concerning tobacco use.This statement was proposed by the Task Force on Nicotine Dependence¹ of the Council on Research. It was approved by the Assembly in November 1994 and by the Board of Trustees in December 1994.
