Abstract
The author describes the establishment of a psychiatric unit in a rural general hospital in Massachusetts and some of the problems that arose in the first two years; particular attention is paid to the interaction between the psychiatric unit and the hospital's medical staff Emphasizing psychiatry as a medical specialty and attempting to relate psychiatry to traditional medical values were vital in coping effectively with the problems.Abstract Teaser
