The authors found that 11 of the 26 items of the Manic-State Rating Scale characterized common elements of mania in 12 manic-depressive patients and that these items were highly correlated with independent ratings of change in the severity of mania. Eight other items provided a basis for dividing the patients into two groups: one showing elation and grandiosity but little paranoid or destructive symptomatology, and the other with minimal euphoria and grandiosity but more marked paranoid and destructive behavior.
