Abstract

The authors discuss some of the reasons for the lag in developing programs for continuing medical education and suggest that many of these problems could be overcome by combining continuing education more closely with formal education. They present general schemes for the division of course material into "permanent" and "time-bound" core courses that would provide the basis for the continuum, and they outline the stages of implementation.
