Abstract

The authors describe a model unit utilizing the nonphysician as primary inpatient therapist for psychiatric patients in a university hospital. The theoretical basis, administrative structure, training program, methods of operation, and problem areas are discussed. Treatment results of this program showed that use of nonmedical primary therapists for psychiatric inpatients is efficacious and provides one answer to the manpower crisis in the mental health field.
